Painting plastic auto parts, though similar to painting other surfaces, requires special procedures to assure an enduring quality finish. It is important that instructions from paint manufactures are followed carefully. Identifying the type of plastic, will determine some specific techniques involved. This article will discuss the procedure for painting new unprimed plastic parts.

Foremost is a three step cleaning of the surface to be painted. Start with a pH-neutral soap and very hot water cleaning inside and out to remove contaminants. Follow with isopropyl alcohol for the removal of non-water-soluble mold release agents. Finally clean with a wax and grease remover. Inspect surface; water beads when rinsing indicate not all contaminates have been removed and further cleaning is needed.

When inspection of the auto part produces satisfactory results, the next step in plastic painting procedures is to sand the surface. A gray abrasive pad with sanding paste is a safer alternative than harsh, rough paper. Choose a sanding paste that is made for plastic scuffing. Rinse and dry surface after sanding. If there are shiny spots repeat the sanding until the entire surface is dull.

To avoid static, which will attract dust, spray surface with an anti-static agent. At this stage you want to spray an adhesion promoter to insure fusion of the plastic and the applied coating used in the plastic painting.

The final step in preparation is the primer. Whether to add flex additives, agents that claim to add flexibility to the coating, is determined by the instructions from the paint manufacture. If the manufacturer suggests flex additives, follow the instructions.

Once the plastic has been thoroughly cleaned and sanded, treated with an anti-static agent, sprayed with an adhesion promoter, and primed it is now ready for the application of paint. At this stage procedures for painting the plastic auto part are much the same as painting any other surface. Following all steps outlined will ensure a long lasting quality finish.
